A Survey for JetBrains IDE Plugin Developers

Hello everyone,

We need your help gathering feedback on your experiences with plugin development and, more importantly, understanding where you think we should focus our efforts next. If you are planning to, or already do, develop plugins, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts in our Plugin Developer Survey.

To provide more context about who we are and what we do, we’ve also published a short blog post introducing the IntelliJ Platform SDK team and our work at JetBrains.

We’d love to hear from as many of you as possible. Please consider sharing the survey and blog post with your peers.

Maybe a bit of an awkward question to ask, but why is the below an option being asked about, yet I don’t see this Discourse mentioned at all?

JetBrains Platform Slack

@chriscarini I think this is meant for longtime users who are used to Slack :man_shrugging:

Hmm, yeah, possibly!

I was honestly expecting some question about this Discourse, but I don’t recall seeing one at all.

The new platform.jetbrains.com forum was not included on purpose. The survey was drafted, planned, and finalized before the new forum. We have some free-form fields where you can share your thoughts if you like.

However, one of the survey’s main objectives is to assess how plugin writers get information and solve problems and relate that to their overall developer experience. It is more important to know what type of channel (video, docs, chat, forum) plugin developers prefer, and it is less critical if the chat is Slack or now here on Discourse.
Therefore, please answer the survey by remembering what you used in the past.

Hey @patrick.scheibe ! That totally makes sense, thank you for sharing that context!

I already filled out the survey, but I wish I had that context ahead of time (e.g. start of the survey), as it may have helped better shape my feedback to share.

Either way, I very much appreciate the team soliciting feedback from the community, about the community! :folded_hands: thank you!

Update: A big thanks to everyone who has already completed the survey. Right now, we have 140 people who completed the survey and 37 who partially filled it out. We’d like to collect feedback from as many people as possible.

Therefore, it would be great if everyone who hasn’t filled out the survey yet could provide their feedback. There is still some time left.

From what I’ve seen so far, I’m overwhelmed by how much additional feedback people provided in the free-form fields. From very honest words of criticism to heart-warming messages of appreciation. Thank you so much for that!
