Debugger Architecture Redesign for 2026.1

Hello everyone!

Over the past several releases, we have been re-architecting the IntelliJ Platform debugger to support Remote Development. By splitting debugger functionality between the frontend and backend, we have significantly improved both responsiveness and stability.

We have carefully adapted existing APIs to minimize disruption. As a result, most debugger plugins should remain unaffected in Local IDE mode, and the transition to 2026.1 will require only minimal changes.

However, since the new split architecture is now fundamental to the debugger functionality, some existing plugins may require updates to remain fully compatible. We recommend testing your plugins with the 2026.1 EAP and checking IDE logs for any warnings or errors related to the split debugger.
